The Roots get “Steaked”
June 29, 2012
Despite the rain on the second day, The Roots Picnic was in full force in the City of Brotherly Love at Festival Pier for its fifth year on June 2nd and 3rd. In addition to hometown favorites The Roots, performances included Diplo, St. Vincent, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), and Major Lazor.
Neiman’s own Philly Steakout brand was on the scene on the second day to spread the cheesesteak cheer to the headliners themselves. Two lucky Neiman ladies, Liz Henry and Rachel Oliner, hand delivered cheesesteaks from one of Philly’s favorite spots, Ishkabibble’s on South Street. A few of the members of the group posed with their cheesesteaks, a welcome meal after their first (of two) set of the night.
“We met three of their band members, who couldn't be nicer, and they were really surprised and happy that we had brought them cheesesteaks,” recounts Rachel. The highlight for Liz was meeting Sousaphone player Damon “Tuba Gooding, Jr.” Bryson and learning about his clever nickname.
Special thanks to Brandon Pankey, The Roots and crew for having Philly Steakout at The Roots Picnic. Maybe we’ll see you this week at Welcome America; we’ll bring extra napkins.
More about Philly Steakout:
PhillySteakOut.com is an innovative website that puts a new spin on ranking Philly’s cheesesteak joints. The site aggregates social media content to rank the top 25 cheesesteaks by volume of foursquare check-ins. By utilizing each foursquare user's profile and hometown information, the site also determines whether each cheesesteak check-in is by a local or a tourist. By doing this, PhillySteakout.com can show which spots are tourist destinations and which are secret local favorites. In addition, the site aggregates Yelp ratings and foursquare tips and photos, paired with basic information on each restaurant. You can check out the site at www.phillysteakout.com (on mobile phone or desktop).
